Is Oatmeal Not as Good as Oat Bran?
Headshot of Lindsay Ostrom.
Right now, for me, the answer is definitely yes!
Since having children a few years ago, I've gotten out of the habit of eating a healthy breakfast. I generally simply start the day with a coffee and a few bites of whatever the girls are eating for breakfast since I find that mornings are hectic and I'm not usually that hungry. Not perfect.
But I'm coming back thanks to our good friend OAT BRAN!
* It resembles oatmeal and is comforting and creamy. It makes me think of Malt O' Meal from my childhood!
* Cooking takes very little time. Three minutes, tops.
* Protein and carbs are both seven grams in the oat bran alone.

of fiber per serving, and much more if you prepare it with milk, eggs, and fruit—something I most definitely do—to create a creamy treat!
I make Oat Bran with Bob's Red Mill! (Partner link) Every time I visit Kowalskis (where I get it here in the Twin Cities), we end up buying many of these bags. If you would prefer to use organic oats, Bob's also sells an organic version!

You could get really creative with it and add almonds, chocolate chips, peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, and so on, but my favorite way to enjoy it is extremely easy: all you need is a small steaming dish, some nice butter that has melted, and a few juicy raspberries on top.
We've been eating so much of this that a few weeks ago we ran out of oat bran, which devastated both of my children, who usually enjoy oatmeal, to have to switch back to the conventional kind! They share my obsession with this oat bran. I suppose we'll be purchasing oat bran in large quantities for some time to come!

How to Prepare This Recipe
1: Reduce It to a Low.
Oat bran, milk, water, and salt should be simmered until thickened. This just requires two minutes.
2: Add your eggs once it has thickened!
Adds more creaminess and protein, but it's optional!
Just make sure the skillet is on low heat and that you mix the eggs often to prevent them from becoming scrambled.

3: Beat over low heat until combined!
To avoid scrambling the eggs, keep it moving constantly over low heat, or even off heat. It will become beautiful and creamy and thick!
4: Delicious! You're through!
Add some butter, maple syrup, and raspberries, please!
Guidelines
Simmer: Combine the oat bran, milk, water, and salt in a small pot. Allow to thicken, 2 to 3 minutes.
Include eggs: Pour in the eggs and whisk rapidly and continually over low heat until mixed (the eggs can scramble if the mixture is too hot, so swirl often and forcefully to work them in gradually). I normally leave them like this for one to three minutes, or until I think they are cooked enough. One may utilize a whisk or A wooden spade.
You're through! Delicious! Add maple syrup, and more milk or water as required, and stir. If desired, top with raspberries, butter, and maple syrup drizzle!
